The mission of Trustees of Color (TOC) is to match and support people of color to and for nonprofit committees and boards.
However, I am often asked, “How do I get on a public board?”
If that is your question, I am offering the following websites and articles for your information.
I will warn you that it is very difficult to access public boards…they are usually looking for nationally/internationally known and respected experts with specific areas of expertise.
You may have more success with local companies who are located and/or headquartered in your area/region.
You will learn about the many ways you prepare and attempt to access corporate board openings including public board search firms.
Based on my knowledge of attempts and successes by others, the BEST WAY to get on a board is to NETWORK AND LIASON WITH SOMEONE WHO IS ALREADY ON THE BOARD ON WHICH YOU DESIRE TO SERVE AND/OR IS A HIGH LEVEL EMPLOYEE OF THAT COMPANY.
I do not mean to dissuade you in any way; but be thoughtful and intentional in the way you pursue this goal. Good luck!
